We all have those movies or books that have stayed with us since we experienced them and impacted us in untold ways
The movies that have played out in my head, over and over again, and that I could never get sick of watching have a few qualities in common.
They’re gorgeously shot and scored.
The cinematography is incredible — I don’t even have the vocabulary to talk specifically about why it’s so good. I just know that the colors, landscapes, beauty and overall detail of the shots are so breathtaking I could look at them forever.
Director Sally Potter’s adaptation of the novel ‘Orlando’ by Virginia Woolf is a sweeping tour de force. It’s epically gorgeous…especially since most of the scenery consists of sprawling kingdoms, lush castles, and icy wonderlands. No less incredible is the accompanying soundtrack. It’s mostly classical which is not my usual go-to genre, and yet listening to it never fails to put me into a dreamy trancelike state. The word is evocative.
The narrative is totally unique…unlike anything I’ve seen before.
Every story has been told before, every word has been spoken. Or so the saying goes. That may be true, but occasionally something comes along and is so uniquely presented that you can’t think of anything else to compare it to.
